A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
