Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
